Fleet safety is the movement towards advancement of driver, asset, and public safety. For several years, fleet safety has been a national dangerous public concern. The goal of fleet safety is to establish policy and procedures that promote focused drivers and compliant drivers. Implementing a fleet safety plan not only reduces the risk of accidents and injury, but also improves driver and public safety.
In designing fleet safety plans, there are five key principles to incorporate in order to guarantee a solid foundation. These principles advance promote fleet safety and improve public safety.
1-Create a comprehensive safety policy.
The safety policy should include all aspects of safety. The limitation on driver hours aspect should include assigning safe and practical shift times to employees and reducing the risk of driver fatigue. Other important factors to include in the safety policy development are: collision policies, vision plans and driving records.
The policy should further include some sort of well-explained and thoughtful consequences for DUIs, license suspensions and poor vehicle care.
2-Data collection of driver activity.
Real-time critical data that measures what your drivers are doing, telematics provide high visibility and insight into driver behaviour, giving real-time driver feedback.
3-Create, develop, and execute driver behaviour programs.
Using the data, fleet safety management can develop many programs to promote safe driving, such as competitive ranking amongst drivers, reward programs for top performance, penalties or consequences for engaging in unsafe or distracted conduct (i.e. reckless driving, distracted or otherwise negligent driving, speeding, endangerment, etc.)
4-Invest in regular vehicle inspection and preventative maintenance.
Vehicles should be routinely inspected and undergo preventative maintenance not only for compliance reasons, but also to ensure the safety of the drivers and the public. Vehicle preventative maintenance and routine inspections identify and repair potential weaknesses in the vehicle.
Failure to routinely inspect and maintain vehicle can result in expensive vehicle breakdown, accidents, or cause injury to the driver or members of the public.
5- Ensure fleet management system integration.
An adequate fleet management system should, at a bare minimum, be able to support the following tasks: tracking vehicle locations, status, health and utilisation using telematics.
